Royalton-Hartland Schoolyard Environmental Project

Click here for more information about the Royalton-Hartland schoolyard project conducted in 1999-2000.

FMC began the environmental project at the Royalton-Hartland schoolyard with specific goals established with the School District and the regulatory Agencies. These goals were:

  1. To provide a lasting environmental solution for the schoolyard
  2. To provide a safe and modern restoration of the athletic facilities
  3. To minimize inconvenience

Soil on the Royalton-Hartland football field and track was excavated, replaced with clean backfill and the new sports complex built.

What do we know about the soil on the Royalton-Hartland schoolyard now?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the N.Y.S. Department of Environmental Conservation and the N.Y.S. Department of Health, have provided us a look the levels of arsenic in the soil after this environmental project. According to their “Responsiveness Summary” available at the Royalton Hartland Community Library, the soil on the school yard is now “below background” for arsenic. In layman’s terms, this means the schoolyard soil has lower arsenic levels than soil in other locations in the Middleport area.

FMC is gratified that the Agencies have provided their determination that the schoolyard environmental project was successful and that the entire schoolyard may be safely used.

FMC has worked hard to achieve the goals of the schoolyard project. We made a significant investment and put a great deal of effort into this project in order to accomplish this positive outcome.
